Finally that came to see the movie that was billed as the most expensive Indian film ever made. We woke up our kids early finished breakfast and drove 70 miles to the theater stood in the line for an hour to collect the tickets already bought online. Excited. Very. Can Shankar out do Mani Ratnam in Dalapathy? Will AR Rahman take over Ilayaraja? Will the movie give a feeling of being entertained without making me feel ridiculed?
Shivaji Rao, Rajini enters the screen with his feet first. Perhaps it will give his devoted fans an opportunity to do Paada-Pooja. Thus, Rajni is automatically given the super-human status that he enjoys among his fans. His fans whistled and cried in frenzy. My daughter who is used to the usual American movies in theater was scared by the roar. We had to hold her and comfort her to get through the film.
First Song scene: Great. Finally we know the liposuction can make you look skinny. Well done Nayanthara. The song cannot stand next to Rakkamma Kaiyathattu. Sorry ARR. I expect a lot better from you.
First fight scene; how many time can you hit with a guitar? I can hit a person with a guitar and the guitar will smash into pieces and the strings will snap tearing someone’s skin. But, with Shivaji the guitar remains intact and the opponents fly off. Okay.
Story gives too much importance to Adi, a thug turned rogue rich man. I am sure there are many evil persons who need such significant treatment. But, the superstar who is to clean up all the evil as single man ends up fighting only with one man far too long. He should have finished him off first as soon as he knew the evil in him. He allows the evils to convene together. What about the trader who takes the black money and transfers it into white? How about all those who collaborated with superstar on money laundering?
Soloman Pappaiyah adds to the redicule of Manu Sastram by showing off his two daughters whose only disqualification is that they are dark skinned. That is further by Shivaji looking for a Tamil girl in Tamil Nadu but ends up with a girl from Karnataka. Don’t get me wrong Shreya is fine looking but, why make a issue of a Tamil girl? It could have been totally avoided had they just stuck to the family oriented girl or traditional girl. Perhaps a Marati looking at Kannadiga will conclude her as Tamil!
Suman does his role well. Vivek look too young to be Rajini’s mama. They could have made Manivannan and Vadivukarasi as Vivek’s parents and Rajini as Vadivukarasi’s unmarried brother. Thus reversing the Mama – Mappillai.
The outfits were suberb. Dance? Extravagance is visible but did not enhance the movie. They should look at Matrix one more time. Rajini has lost his agility but, I am very sure that current audience will take whatever he dishes out in fight or dance. As far as acting I believe Rajini is a great actor too. I have seen Mullum Malarum and Arilirunthu Arupathuvarai.
Shankar should stick with Arjun or look at the new comers for a movie that really involves fight scenes. Our Superstar is not Jackie Chan, Harrison Ford or Sean Connery. Rajini cant even run properly to convince his fighting skils.
If this movie had Danush in the lead then would have accept as the age might be more compatible. Then the story was too weak.
Sorry Rajini, it is time you get into Politics and leave the entertainment business alone.
